I am not one to back away from a challenge.  Specially a self imposed challenge.I came across a program called "One Hundred Push Ups" about two years ago.  Interesting, I thought, considering the fact that back then it was a stretch... a very long stretch for me to complete 8-10 push ups in good form.  So, I printed the schedule and off I went. One thing led to another (excuses I think) and next thing you know I had forgotten about the program.  I don't remember how far into it I progressed, but I think it must have been somewhere around one, maybe two weeks.  The only…

It is without a doubt that an Ironman event is the ultimate test of speed, strength and endurance; a physical test like no other.  However, it is very possible that the triathletes mental strength will be tested to an even higher degree.Making it through one of the world's most grueling events is not a matter of chance.  No doubt you will come, as most do, physically prepared to…

Great event and I was happy to get through it, but knee/plica pain just killed my run. My knee started the night before the race - I think it was from kneeling too much (no, not from praying, but maybe that would have helped). The swim was great (other than dodging a few jellyfish). The bike generally went well, but at about mile 95 or so my knee started aching and got worse as hit a 20 mph headwind that lasted through the end of the race. The knee pain for the whole run was ridiculous, but I thought it would be a short-term recovery. It has been about 2 1/2 months and it still hurts even…

Even after I realized there was a surprise snow dusting and I had to scrape off my car. That has been my workout theme for the past few weeks. Bubbles. At my usual swimming spot, I’m almost always the fastest person in the water, and I’m not even a speedy swimmer. Lots of aquasizers and aquajoggers. It is hard to push yourself when you are doing solo workouts and you don’t have a carrot (or bubbles) in front of you to chase. Resolutions 5k Run kicks off 2012 As we begin flying through the new 2012 calendar and say “whew” after running my first event of the new year, it is time to outline my goals for the year.  Instead of doing a half dozen events, I feel like 2012 should be the year of simple and calculated performance.  Let’s focus on one or two larger goals and let the rest fall in as they come. Choose Your Distance! Recognizing the diversity of the triathlon sport, 2012 will be the year to step up.  First, I will complete my first “long” course triathlon.  This means swimming…
  • Reflecting: What an Awesome Year 2011 Was!

    31 Dec 2011 | 9:32 pm
On this New Year’s Eve, I can’t help but reflect on how much I’ve grown in 2011 and how awesome the year was.   While 2009 was the year of firsts and 2010 was the year of obsessive burnout, 2011 was the year of balance.  Here are some of my best, and not so best, moments. September 2011 – Carpinteria Triathlon Sprint The Carpinteria Triathlon is my favorite triathlon.  Period.  It was very fitting that this year was the first year that I swam the entire ocean swim freestyle.  No more side stroke and kicking with my legs.  This translated to more energy and a much…

The off season provides time to relax and let the body recover from the strenuous racing season.   As triathletes, we live a lifestyle full of activity, healthy food and awesome friends & family. But, during the winter when the weather is cold, wet and dreary, we tend to focus our activities indoors at the gym and around the house.  To add another layer of complexity, the holidays tease us with a variety of scrumptious foods like pumpkin pie, egg nog, turkey, sweet potatoes, ham and cranberry jelly.   The holidays usually come and go with an increased waist line. But, you can keep it…

In my first installment on the topic of creating a triathlon training dashboard, I discussed a few issues surrounding the data, some challenges with metrics such as tracking intensity and some feedback on a popular online workout tracking solution. In the time since I published the last post, an entire triathlon season has gone by and I am a little more experienced on the fitness and triathlon analytics front.  So much so, I created TrainingMetrix, LLC, a company dedicated to producing simple, yet sophisticated, analytics for athletes, triathletes, beginners, and anyone interested in fitness…

Unlike the professionals who now have the Kona Pro Ranking system for their opportunity to qualify for racing in the Ironman World Championship race. Age groupers get their chance via qualifying slots offered mainly at Ironman events around the world. What some age groupers don't know is that some Ironman 70.3 triathlon races offer qualifying slots for Kona. Usually the number of slots at these events is smaller than on would see being offered at a regular Ironman event. Just because the event is half the distance doesn't mean is easier to get a slot to the big dance. By far the competition…

Marino Vanhoenacker of Belgium and Jodie Swallow of Great Britain kicked off their 2012 season with win, taking today's 2012 titles at Ironman 70.3 South Africa Sunday in East London, South Africa. The pair led similar race stories with both dominating the field virtually from start to finish. Vanhoenacker had to make up some ground after the swim but once ahead, never looked back while Swallow exited the water first and blazed a trail to the finish line, never offering up a sign of weakness. Once the formalities were concluded, the piercing sound of the starter's gun sounded at 07h00 for the…

Today’s Daily Affirmation from Tri-Essential.com  is “Beat the Weather!”  I would say this would apply to pretty much anyone in the country these days even the South where colder than normal temperatures have been prevailing.  For hardy New Englanders, however, “Beating the Weather,” doesn’t mean retreating to a treadmill (okay for some people it does), but if you’re a triathlete (in my mind), that should mean put more layers on and get out on the road! I’ve become so used to running in cold, nasty weather here in Boston that I can remember…

by Chris Hague This past week, Chrissie Wellington, one of the greatest triathletes if not athletes of all time, announced that she is taking a break from Ironman so that she can focus on other priorities in her life like her upcoming book and her work with charities. While Wellington thankfully is by no means gone forever, her “retirement” is a huge loss for the sport. In my opinion, Wellington represented the true spirit of triathlons and a mindset that many athletes—both pro and age groupers alike—would be well to learn from. For one, she always had a smile on her face. Whether she…

You may recall that during the seventies marathon swimmer Diana Nyad was the greatest long distance swimmer in the world, and one of the most popular endurance athletes in America. She swam so much and so fast that she broke numerous records including the 50-year-old mark for circling Manhattan Island. In case your wondering she swam around the island (7 hrs, 57 min) in 1975. But perhaps her most famous (if unsuccessful) swim was when she tried twice to swim the 103-miles from Florida to Cuba. Both times she did not make it and almost died trying to overcome the current, waves and sharks.

Burn out is starting to become a major problem in many tri-athletes because each year the triathlon season seems to be longer and more intense.Being a coach, I have witnessed many athletes struggle with their training, with some losing their focus and their motivation. That is why during training it is always beneficial to take a break, relax, charge-up. Usually, the perfect time to do this is during the fall.  If you begin to notice that you no longer look forward to your training, to your long bike ride, or to your long morning run, then it is time for you to sit back and admit…

If you want to increase your speed, increase your strength, move past a lot of people then you might want to race negatively. Yes, it does sound contradicting, but it is one of the secrets to winning a race. For several years, racing negatively has been used. A good number of world records, especially in marathons, are carried out utilizing the negative split, which is also the same with swimming. Negative split simply requires one to run the other half of the event a pace faster than the initial half of the race.Take for example, if you need 45:00 to complete a 10k race, in a negative split…

“After climbing a great hill, one only finds that there are many more hills to climb.” – Nelson Mandella Winter seems to be a distant memory for the moment, at least in Northeast.  Take advantage of the warmth. It's a perfect time for hill work.  When it's really cold outside, this type of run isn't fun.  The road may be icy or rough.  You build a good sweat going up and then get chilled going down.  That absolutely isn't this case this weekend.  Hill work is a great way to build endurance strength without putting excess stress on your body.
