Kona-bound from Cozumel

Located in the Caribbean Sea, Cozumel has long been considered one of the best diving spots in the world. . The clear waters around the island are home to the second largest barrier reef in the world. Ironman Lanzarote 2012: The Heat is On, Or Maybe Not
16 May 2012 | 8:31 amThe word here in Lanzarote is that things are going to cool off by the weekend - great news to any athletes who might have rolled in over the weekend. "Cool off" would be to something closer to the high 20s or low 30s Celsius that is typical on this Canary Island about 100 km off the coast of Africa. That's good news for everyone involved in Saturday's race - the most common description of a ride here on the island over the last few days has been "it's like riding into a giant hairdryer that's blowing hot air at you." -
Vitacost Whey Protein Complex Powder
15 May 2012 | 8:33 amTriathletes are always trying to figure out how they can recover more quickly from workouts and races - it's the nature of the beast when it comes to trying to juggle three different sports. Whey protein has been shown to build muscle, speed up recovery time, and, best of all for triathletes who have another workout coming up, is easily digested, making it an excellent source of protein right after a workout.

In January 2012, two of my daughters did the Eno Equalizer race with me, which was put on by the Godiva Track club. The race course is rugged four miles in the Eno River state park. From Rage to Results
24 Apr 2012 | 12:20 pmStacey Richardson’s Weekly Workout Tip: 2008 Worlds, p.o.'d at Poseidon Don’t you always wonder what rage can do for your race results? I often toss this around in my mind, as I begin the journey of coaching various athletes with different styles and personalities. It’s not every athlete who can effectively channel rage and anger into breakthrough performances. Not every athlete is wired like Lance Armstrong or Chris McCormack, using anger effectively on the race course. For every Macca, there is a Chrissie Wellington who races through the pain by channeling joy,…

About That Time
13 May 2012 | 1:54 pmIn just seven short days, Ironman 70.3 Florida will take place. My wave is set to start at 6:40am. Yes, once again, us older guys go immediately following the pros and right behind us, the 18-24 year old males. My bib number is "200". Luck number! For me, this will be the first of three A-races this summer, all three 70.3 distances. All three Ironman events.Training for this race has been different to say the least. Different in that it hasn't compared to last year's regime for the Ironman. Nonetheless, I followed my coach's instructions (for the most… -
About The Silver Lining
30 Apr 2012 | 4:44 pm"Clouds may come. Clouds may go. But behind each cloud you know, the sun or the moon is shinning through."It is often said that each and every cloud has a silver lining. Sometimes however, its difficult to at first glance recognize this. Because of this very same reason, I have learned to take time out after any "not so ideal" experience to gather my thoughts and compose myself. This was the case after last Saturday's Country Music Half Marathon in Nashville.I had been looking forward to this event for weeks. Not just because it has become one of my favorite… -
Healthy Eating: Some Tips for Staying on Track & Strengthening Your Resolve :)
13 Apr 2012 | 11:14 amWe all know that exercise is only part of the equation. Of course, good nutrition is another, highly significant part of that equation as well. And, as athletes, we all know that it's also an essential component in helping to boost our athletic performance. Simply put, an athlete cannot maximize their health and fitness potential without it.Of course, the tricky part is establishing and maintaining our path to good nutrition. Sometimes we might find that it can be especially challenging when we're trying to form these new patterns, particularly because both eating and exercise have added… -
About Pushing Beyond Perceived Limits
28 Mar 2012 | 8:26 amI had just about resigned myself to the fact that my run pace would be around the 10:00 to 10:15 mark. No matter how hard I tried, no matter what I did, it always came back to that. Sometimes I would venture into the 9:50ish pace but would quickly go back to that very familiar point. And then my heel (plantar fasciitis) showed its ugly face. I was sidelined for some three months. No running whatsoever. I was advised to let it heal by letting it rest, amongst other things. So that I did. I ran The Nashville Half Marathon on November 12th and the pain… -
About A Happy Coincidence
2 Mar 2012 | 7:20 amI have been dispensing free advise for as long as I can remember to anyone who is willing to listen. I have also been fascinated with the ability of the human mind to take us places we never thought possible, at times overcoming insurmountable obstacles. So much so that I have dedicated a good portion of whatever free time I may find, to educate myself in the subject and to test theories in the matter. As human beings we often take the path of least resistance, keeping us in a comfortable and familiar zone. Venturing out of this zone takes work, effort and dedication and…

Exercise orgy!
14 May 2012 | 2:15 pmIt basically was psychologically a weekend day: campus is virtually shut down because President Obama was speaking at the Barnard commencement (literally about 50 yards from my apartment), I worked a ton yesterday and just needed some downtime. I'm just transitioning into the much more independent part of my year, where I don't teach and am mostly working at home on my own projects; I'm going to Ottawa next weekend, probably won't exercise much while I'm there and would like to pack in a lot of solid hours in the meantime. In a very good mood now, particularly given good news just now… -

I was up, out the door and on my way to the start line with fellow Rev3 teammate, Julia, in tow. While I tried not to put too much pressure on this race, it had the potential of completely changing my race schedule for the year. I could either lock down a qualifying slot at one of the first local triathlons of the season, or I could scramble to try to enter race after race for the next 2 months in hopes that I can grab it somewhere else. To avoid getting too strung out, I tried to focus on it… -
Three Things Thursday: Fox – Clocks – Knox
3 May 2012 | 11:27 amBlogging has been light lately, but except for a few hiccups, training has been solid. Coach Hirsch is happy with the work that I’ve done, and that makes me happy. Plenty of serious and steady training all the way back to mid-December. I think I’m in the best swim/bike shape that I’ve ever been in at this point in the season. The run? Meh. We’ll see if I can pull that together, but it is definitely coming along. Race season is coming up quickly and that is the true test of my training after all. In lieu of actual real SwimBikeRun updates, here are three random… -
Caption Contest: Slippery Edition
18 Apr 2012 | 12:38 amI stumbled on this picture and it was too funny not to share. Between the chick laughing in the back and the tons of aero gear sprawled out over the ground, I got a good chuckle. I feel bad for the guy (because this is exactly the kind of thing that will happen to me one of these days) but that doesn’t mean we can’t have some fun with it. You know what that means? BAA Deferment and Triathlon Elitism
17 Apr 2012 | 4:17 amLet’s face it. Even if most triathletes are incapable of excelling in any one sport and instead decide to be mediocre at three, we still have this elitist mindset when it comes to single sport athletes. Take the Boston marathon expo for example. While it is practically tradition across all endurance sports to don gear from other big races you’ve done on the days before a big event as a badge of honor, there is a growing trend of triathletes wearing Ironman gear at the Boston expo. It is the clothing equivilent of screaming. “Most of my marathons have been after a 2.4 mile… -
Starting of the season right
16 Apr 2012 | 10:08 amWhile it seemed like every Boston runner that isn’t doing the marathon decided to do the BAA 5k yesterday, the idea of doing a 3 mile race with 5,000 people makes me throw up in my mouth. Just a little bit. NOT my kind of race. Instead, I picked out a local 5k just down the street from my house for a little run fitness test. It could not have been any more different than the craziness going on downtown. I registered 30 minutes before the race. Just walked up and handed over cash in exchange for a bib and timing chip. Then Sam and I decided to just lay in the shade on a soft patch of…

Keeping the Flame Alive
6 May 2012 | 10:01 pmFire. It is inside every triathlete. It is what makes us jump into freezing water. It is what makes us ride 112 miles and then run a marathon! As strong as the Fire can be, it is also quite delicate. The Fire can spit, cough and even die out. When it does, we don’t do the crazy things that triathletes should do. Here are some quick tips on keeping the Fire alive and well inside you: Track your workouts closely, paying attention to intensity Listen to your body and giving yourself a day off Have a regular yoga session in your weekly routine Hang out with the right people and… -
Running to a Clear Mind
21 Feb 2012 | 1:00 amWay back when I started my journey to triathlete, I would hear people say, “I think best when I am running.” My response was to roll my eyes and mutter to myself, “yeah, right” as all I ever felt when I was running was pain and lack of oxygen. But as my body got used to running, developed stronger muscles, and an improved mental attitude, running became a much more peaceful, sublime experience. I was able to cover new ground with my increased endurance and go exploring new areas of town, noticing things that one would never see in a car. My community came alive as I… -
On Becoming a Race Director…
4 Feb 2012 | 6:44 pmGiving back to the community can take many forms. From donations to local charities to adopting a highway, there is more than one way to give back. How one gives back often depends on their beliefs and passions. Being a triathlete convert from an office potato, I understand the impact of fitness on improving one’s quality of life. So, for my philanthropic project for 2012, I decided to do something so outside my box, that I downright frightened myself. Combining my passion for competition and the local need for a new type of sporting event, I created the concept of the Goleta… -
The New Year Brings New Goals!
6 Jan 2012 | 9:16 pmResolutions 5k Run kicks off 2012 As we begin flying through the new 2012 calendar and say “whew” after running my first event of the new year, it is time to outline my goals for the year. Instead of doing a half dozen events, I feel like 2012 should be the year of simple and calculated performance. Let’s focus on one or two larger goals and let the rest fall in as they come. Choose Your Distance! Recognizing the diversity of the triathlon sport, 2012 will be the year to step up. First, I will complete my first “long” course triathlon. This means swimming… -
Reflecting: What an Awesome Year 2011 Was!
31 Dec 2011 | 9:32 pmOn this New Year’s Eve, I can’t help but reflect on how much I’ve grown in 2011 and how awesome the year was. While 2009 was the year of firsts and 2010 was the year of obsessive burnout, 2011 was the year of balance. Here are some of my best, and not so best, moments. September 2011 – Carpinteria Triathlon Sprint The Carpinteria Triathlon is my favorite triathlon. Period. It seems like we just got here and now it's already time to leave. [Sigh] I love it here; I wish I didn't have to go back! This is my third visit and this trip has been more fruitful than my previous visits and as long as the Ironman California rumor continues to be a rumor, I will revisit this location again next year. -
Spring Training 2012
8 Mar 2012 | 10:43 pmI get a pass for typos and grammar. I'm just throwing that out there in advance in case the grammar police decide to show up on my blog.As some of you know, I'm on my annual pilgrimage south in search of warmer weather which is kind of a joke considering where I live. But I'm a cry baby and if the temperature drops below 70F, I'm unhappy. -
50 Slots
8 Mar 2012 | 7:16 amThe game just got a little tougher! It seems there are fewer qualifying slots available. I've only checked a select number of sites but of those that are of interest to me, 50 qualifying slots appears to be the magic number.

The Natural Talent Myth- And How This Is Great for your Swimming
14 May 2012 | 2:58 pmI’m in the midst of reading a book called The Talent Code, by Daniel Coyle, which is about how greatness is not born, it’s grown. The author uses many examples from the world of sports to show where some of the so-called “super talents” have come from, and why it’s much more about “deep practice” than any kind of innate skill. Granted, if you are 5’3, your odds of making the NBA are pretty much zero (although, 5’3 Mugsy Bogues even proved this possibility several years ago as an NBA guard!). And look at some examples in the sport of… -
The Ten Commandments of Triathlon Racing
12 May 2012 | 12:47 amby Chris Hague I stood upon the mountain as the rain beat upon my bearded face and lightning illuminated the stormy night sky. When suddenly the clouds parted, and my coach descended through the storm upon the mountain. “Chris, take these tablets and hold them sacred. Follow them and you shall obtain success, break them and feel the wrath of the triathlon Gods.” She then ascended back into the sky where she rejoined the pantheon of coaches, trainers and, racers. I looked down upon the two great tablets that she had given to me and inscribed upon them were the ten commandments of racing…… -
3 Essentials for Triathlon Workout Recovery
3 May 2012 | 7:05 amby Chris Hague If you are like me and many triathletes, you hate off days. Whether out of fear of losing fitness or getting fat, I dread seeing that gap in the my training log with a friendly reminder from my coach to take it easy (her last note was “Chris, recovery means recovery: no elliptical, no easy spin—do nothing). Recovery is essential to proper training; without it, we would get injured and burned out. In fact, recovery days should be approached with just as much care and consideration as a workout. Many athletes approach recovery in the wrong way by scheduling too much, not… -
Triathlon Training with Fire
28 Apr 2012 | 2:59 amby Chris Hague There are few luddites in the athletic world who refuse to use technology from digital training logs to social media websites to iPods; they see it as a distraction from their enjoyment of the sport. Personally, I love it. I splurge on the latest technology (whether I necessarily need it or not); I analyze my data down to the single watt; I religiously read the latest blogs; and, I pour over fellow athletes’ training logs, tweets, and blogs. I find that my technology and social media fix not only allows me to improve my own fitness but also stay connected to others. However,… -
Triathlon Training Laws
20 Apr 2012 | 8:29 amCoach Chris Hague’s Laws of Training There are not many laws in training. Nutrition plans, supplements, training regimens are all so individualized and personal that it is hard to find a sweeping truth. However, one fundamental fact about endurance athletics is “junk in, junk out.” It is pretty simple law that can be applied to any facet of training, yet many athletes reject or flat out deny it. Let us look at the evidence. The basic premise behind my law is that if you put junk into your training whether it be food, millage, or recovery you are going to get junk out. This idea make…

6 Signs You Are Training too Hard
1 May 2012 | 2:00 pm1. You repeatedly fail to complete your normal workoutFailure’s a funny thing here. We all train to the point of not being able to go any further, lets call that normal failure and this is fine. What if you can’t manage to lift what would normally be a breeze? If your performance is failing this dramatically you’re probably training too much but remember that pushing yourself to progress and then not getting there is different. If you’re unable to do today what was a breeze last month then you’ve been training too much.2. Leanness Is GoingSadly you can’t rely on increased… -
How to Pedal more Efficiently

However, once you take a deeper look into it you will be able to connect the dots on where power is utilized. Pedal SmartThere are different directions that you can use when pedalling. You can pedal up, down, back, forward and there is no denying that you will have to master all of these techniques. Yet, despite the amount of advice and tips available, it is still one of the toughest leg movements to master. This is because an efficient pedal stroke is the result of a flawless relationship between… -
Optimal Running Rhythm
17 Apr 2012 | 2:04 pmRhythm is necessary in life. There is rhythm in the falling of a leaf, rhythm in the rising and setting of the sun, rhythm in the changing of season, rhythm in lunar cycles and even within the system within our body there is a ruling rhythm. Rhythm Is LifeThere is a rhythm in our heart beat, rhythm in our breathing and even the taping of our toes when we hear nice music creates rhythm. In life we employ rhythm for different purpose and specific reasons. Sometimes we use it to calm us, sometimes to cope with abrupt movements. Basically we are in a world of rhythm, thus rhythm…

Tuesday Time Out
15 May 2012 | 3:19 pmThank you all for your awesome emails and comments since my post yesterday. It is good to know that I am not alone. After I posted that blog, I was chatting with one of my San Diego besties, Life Coach Carrie, and she made me pinky promise with her that we would do better and be better to ourselves. Now, a pinky promise was a bit of a logistical impossibility 3,000 miles away, but you get the idea. I like to honor my pinky promises. (Me and Life Coach Carrie, January 2012. Crazy TRX workout. My core is STILL sore from that workout.) Oh... and I put my scale away… -
I Know Better...
14 May 2012 | 1:37 pmI was born a healthy baby tipping the scales at a nice eight pounds. Yes, I was a semi- fat kid. But I was one of those husky, strong specimens. “Give the bat to Meredith, she’ll hit a home run,” my dad would tell the softball coach. I would put down my doughnut on the bench and proceed to bat. (I kid.) The strong, fat thing was tossed around quite often around me. “She’s strong!” they’d all say. But really, rarely (never) did I hit a homerun. [However, I could punch the catcher in the face and then hit the local Dairy Queen for a large Blizzard if the day called for… -

13 May 2012 | 7:00 pmHAINES CITY -- Making millions of dollars of improvements to Lake Eva Park may prove to be one of the best investments Haines City ever made. And Polk County's investing $250,000 to help with the expenses of the Ironman competition over five years also appears to be paying off. Top 11 Takeaways from Wellington's Memoirs
10 May 2012 | 5:00 amI just finished reading Life without Limits - A World Champion's Journey by Chrissie Wellington. A complete book review appears on Trijuice.com. Here are my takeaways on a napkin that were a cut below Nick's journalistic standards: #1) If a girl shows up to a race with a bike she had named "Calvin" give her a wide berth. #2) Remember that girl you called "Muppet" in grade school? Yes, you. She can kick your ass now. #3) If you ever find yourself sans underwear (aka "gone commando") and are about to meet the Prime Minister or President, just act like nothing is wrong. -
Toughman Tri Creates a Closed Bike Course
9 May 2012 | 1:46 pmRace director and owner Dr. Richard Izzo spent a few minutes with us this weekend talking about changes this year made to the Toughman Triathlon bike course. In just 5 short years, Izzo has built one of the largest 70.3 distance races in the country held on the shores of the Hudson River in Croton-on-Hudson. Rich isn't about to rest on his laurels, though, as we learned. This year, he created a closed bike course that adds a completely new dimension to the race. Paul: Looking back on 2011, what was the biggest improvement to the race? Rich: I would say that every aspect of our race… -
Pressure is not nice
15 Apr 2012 | 3:48 pmI'm in the middle of reading A Life Without Limits - A World Champion's Journey by Chrissie Wellington I'll write a full review for our friends at Trijuice. Sitting out in the Arizona desert after a brief, but very hot run, one passage jumped out: "Pressure is not nice. It is a necessary evil if you want to achieve, but you're not supposed to enjoy it. It brings with it great stress, but you deal with it, and the redemption comes when you achieve things because of it. The trick is to understand which pressures are necessary and which ones are the dangerous… -
Dialing in the Buzz with CLIF
13 Apr 2012 | 8:02 amWe recently scored a stash of new CLIF Shot Energy Gel that - best of all - comes in three "doses" of caffeine. We passed it off in a gesture of remarkable generousity to our MTB friend Siobhan to test for us. Even before taking the food on an epic ride, she had a lot to gush about: "I’ve been using Clif Shot Bloks since they hit the market a few years ago. I really like what I see and am eager to try out in the next few weeks. As a mountain biker, I like the packaging. It looks much less messy than traditional gels and easier to eat because no water is needed to… -
Help! My Swim Brief is on Fire!
12 Apr 2012 | 8:01 amI swam so fast this morning that my briefs caught on fire. Not really. But I would feel that way with a custom suit I designed on Finis’s new custom website service. Finis follows in the path that Nike blazed for shoes – you can now design your own set of personal or team suits and have them shipped home. All for the basically the same cost as that boring dark blue Speedo you always wear. You do need to order at least six suits at the same time to show off your own design. Does anyone want to split a smoking hot order with me?

I Love Open Water Swimming and Boise is Looming!
30 Apr 2012 | 9:37 pmFinishing RAGE!Still feeling happy about Rage so decided to post a picture! With Boise 70.3 less than 40 days out, the workouts have gotten super race specific. As in:Saturday Brick: 53 miles biked, 3.2 miles run. Sunday Brick: 13.4 miles biked, 10.75 miles run.Which made today's easy open water swim just what the doctor ordered!Didn't sleep well last night (which is unusual). Yesterday's long run lingered in my body longer than "normal." Probably because it was an excellent run with coach confirming: "Really good pacing!" when she saw the data.Plus it was in the heat. Splurging is FUN -- Track Me Tomorrow at RAGE!
20 Apr 2012 | 2:20 pmNormally on the day before a race I'm super nervous. Even if I'm off my feet resting (which I normally do) the stress seems to find a way in. Then it slaps me around and makes me tired and fried feeling.I'm happy to say that today is different. Sure I'm a little nervous but mostly the past few days I've felt acutely how much racing in RAGE means to me and how far I've come -- and even though I've struggled with eating a bit these past few weeks (again) I know I'm ready. And grateful. And I've SPLURGED on a GPS tracker for the occasion! My impression is that most people get the tracker for Half… -
New Wetsuit! (Rage is getting closer)
17 Apr 2012 | 9:12 pmToday Tony and I went down to the lake so I could practice in my new wetsuit.I was nervous. Sometimes it doesn't take much. Would the wetsuit fit?Would swimming one mile feel difficult?Would the water be cold?Turns out I was nervous for nothing! The wetsuit fit and slid off more quickly and easily than my old one. Except for one little thing at the neck, which Tony adjusted for me, it worked perfectly. It felt more buoyant than my old one and more flexible.Swimming one mile did not feel difficult. HELLO what have I been doing in the pool all these months?!?!?!? My swim goal time for Rage is… -

Stop your chain from dropping off front chain rings
14 May 2012 | 2:37 pmIf you have ever had problems with your chain popping off when shifting down from your big ring to your small, you will understand how frustrating it is as it usually happens at the worst time. Here is a simple and inexpensive little upgrade you can make that will stop this from happening. A chain catcher will make all the difference and goes on just under your front derailleur (see image above). I'f your chain does go to far to the left the chain catcher will stop it from going too far and keep it on track to hook in to the bottom chain ring. You can get these chain catchers… -
How often should you clean your chain and general chain maintenance
10 May 2012 | 1:00 pmThis is a somewhat controversial topic but The one thing for sure is that you cant over clean and maintain your chain and drive train. You will notice that after proper cleaning and maintenance that you will have better shifting and a drive train that has less noise. You cant wear out your chain by cleaning (with in reason that is) so we recommend more then we would less. The type of roads and weather you ride in have a massive impact on your chain wear especially in wet and snow. In the wet your chain and drive train will pick up a lot more grit and grim off the road and this grit and… -
How to avoid muscle cramps and "bonking"
8 May 2012 | 12:56 pmHow do you minimize muscle cramps and "bonking"? It's always in the back of your mind when things get tough out there but there are some things you can do to help minimize the chances of this happening to you. Muscle cramps are one thing but when you "bonk" it can be downright miserable! and just getting home can be difficult to say the least eeven when your not far from home. Muscle cramps effect upto 60% of endurence athletes at some points so chances are you will have to deal with the problem. The majority of exercise related cramping is caused from dehydration and sodium depletion. -

Do club bike races to improve your triathlon bike leg
1 May 2012 | 11:29 amOne of the best way to really bring in your bike legs for the bike leg of your triathlon is to regularly do club bike races in the season. Because of the pace and competitive nature of the group you can use these events as a high intensity workout. Depending on what your looking for in your work out you can try to make some break away or if the group is too fast for that you can sit in the group and improve your skills at high speed. Things to keep in mind when doing the group bike races. 1. Make sure you are mindful of hydration. Because of the speed as well as the fact you are…
